Light field

Light-Field Photography

Microlens imaging for refocus, depth, liveness, and iris capture across a much larger volume.

A light field records both where a ray lands and which way it was traveling. That extra angular sample lets a camera refocus after the shutter, estimate depth, and see around mild occlusion. The group uses it as a biometric sensor, not only as a computational-photography topic.

Light-field focal stacks support iris presentation-attack detection, because a printed eye and a living eye do not occupy depth in the same way. All-in-focus designs extend the capture volume so more of a walking person stays sharp. The group has also published on light-field super-resolution, view synthesis, and a texture-and-occlusion disparity benchmark (TO-LF).

A 2024 survey in IET Computer Vision, selected for the Wiley China Excellent Author Program, reviews the optical models, camera prototypes, and deep-learning applications of light-field imaging.
